If you are trying for a baby the best tips for getting pregnant is to accurately predict when your day of ovulation is. To increase your chances of getting pregnant, a home ovulation test can predict when your body has released eggs ready to be fertilised (ovulation). Knowing when you are ovulating can tell you exactly when the best chances are of getting pregnant, simply by telling you when the best time to have sex is.
There are 3 types of ovulation tests to choose from, the only difference is in the ease of use and design. All fertility tests work in the same principle; no matter if you order an ovulation strip, cassette or midstream test.
| Value | Ease | Pro |
|
Strip:
The cheapest and most popular option. Great value for those trying to conceive who test often. The test is performed by dipping a strip into a urine sample (container not supplied). |
Midstream (Stick):
The easiest and most well-known format to use but also the most expensive. To perform this test the wick end is placed directly in the urine stream when you urinate. |
Cassette:

A home ovulation test works by detecting a sudden surge in the amount of Luteinising Hormone (LH) in your urine. This surge occurs 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. This means that your best chance of getting pregnant is 24 to 36 hours after you have detected the surge by using an ovulation testing kit.
How do you get pregnant?
A woman becomes pregnant when male sperm successfully fertilises the female’s egg. This can only happen when an egg has been released from the ovaries (ovulation) and travels down the fallopian tubes into the womb (uterus) where it is ready to be fertilised.
A small concentration of LH is present in the urine all the time and plays an essential role in ovarian functions. However 1-2 days prior to the release of a woman’s egg a surge in LH levels occurs. A home ovulation test can help you get pregnant by detecting your surge in LH. The best time to have sexual intercourse is 24-36 hours after the LH surge has been detected, this will aid in maximising your chances of getting pregnant.
As there are no physical symptoms of ovulation, an ovulation testing kit greatly improves your chances of getting pregnant. A female egg only lives’ for 12-14 hours after it is released, and a male’s sperm can only survive a few days in a woman’s body, predicting your ovulation date and using a home ovulation test is the best way of increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
How to use a home ovulation test kit
Using an ovulation testing kit is simple and the principle is the same for which ever format of test is used. All home test kits come with easy to follow instructions. To predict your day of ovulating you will need to follow the steps outlined below:
• Identify which day you should begin testing by using the Cycle Chart
• Collect a urine sample
• Follow the test instructions with your order
• Wait for results to appear
There are some important things to note: do not use first morning urine, the best time to collect your urine and use a test is between 10am- 8pm; reduce your liquid intake about 2 hours before as a diluted urine sample can prevent the test from detecting the LH surge.
The ovulation calendar explained
Before you can begin ovulation testing, you will need to determine when to start testing. To do this, you need to work out the length of your cycle; the average is 28 days. Count your first day of bleeding as day 1. Once you know the length of your cycle refer to the chart below. The left hand column is your cycle length in days and the right hand column is the day you should begin testing on.

As you can see, the first day of your period (when you start bleeding) is marked on the calendar as day 1 in blue. Exactly 11 days later (marked in red), you would begin testing.

Comon questions about fertility and ovulation
Q What is my cycle length?
A Put simply, this is the number of days from your first day of menstrual bleeding to the day before your next period starts. Since the average cycle length is 28 days, the best time begin testing for LH is 11 days after your period.
Q I have recently come off the contraceptive pill; will this affect my result?
A As the pill disrupts your natural hormone balance, it may take a few months for your periods to return to normal. You may want to wait until you have had 2 normal periods before starting to use ovulation tests.
Q I used 5 tests and still didn’t detect my LH surge. Why not?
A Most women with regular menstrual cycles will detect their LH Surge in 5 days or less, however, if you have irregular cycles you may need to test for longer and acquire additional ovulation tests.
Q Can breast feeding affect my results?
A Yes, breast feeding and pregnancy can both affect your results.
Q Will alcohol or other common medications affect the results of this test?
A No, but you should consult your doctor if you are taking any hormonal treatments.
Q I had a positive result for the LH surge and had sex at the best time indicated, but I still can’t get pregnant. Why not?
A Don’t worry! Trying for a baby often takes couples several months to become pregnant. The most important thing you can do is to carry on with ovulation testing and find out your day of ovulation increasing your chances of getting pregnant.
