From around the age of 25, a woman’s fertility will slowly begin to decrease. Once you are 35, your fertility will decline even more quickly, until you reach the menopause. Worrying about your biological clock can take over your life.  If you are feeling pressure to have children because you think the menopause is ‘just around the corner’ a home menopausal check can accurately assess your fertility within minutes.

Early menopause symptoms

Age is the biggest cause of declining fertility, however there are signs associated with early onset menopause. If you are over 30 the warning signs of menopause can include irregular menstrual cycles; being persistently tired; irritable; sudden hot flushes; sweating; unexplained mood swings; and feelings of depression.

Menopause testing

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is intimately involved with a woman's fertility and rising levels of this hormone tend to be associated with reduced fertility. FSH is always present in a woman’s body, but the pituitary gland produces higher levels of FSH when the ovaries start failing to release eggs.  The pituitary does this in an attempt to get the ovaries to respond, causing the remaining eggs to mature.

Rising levels of FSH indicate a decrease in fertility and is a sign of menopause. A home  menopause test will detect high levels of the hormone FSH in urine. High levels of FSH throughout the monthly cycle are an indication that you are entering into the menopause.

How to perform a home test

A home menopause test is supplied in the form of a wand that is held in the flow of urine when urinating; just like the common pregnancy test. 2 tests are included in the kit, and if both test results are positive, it is an indicator of reduced fertility levels.

There are some important things to note, we recommend testing with your first morning urine as this has the highest levels of FSH. Testing at any other time of the day may give false negative test results. You can start your first test at anytime of the month and then the second test should be taken 1 week later.

A positive result means you have high FSH levels A Negative Test result indicates that your FSH levels are not raised. FSH levels can be high for short periods of time in your monthly cycle, but extended periods of high levels are indicative of a pre-menopausal state. If the second test is also positive, you should make an appointment to visit your doctor.

Menopause treatment

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is frequently used to treat the symptoms of the menopause, although a recent study has shown that there may be a slightly increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease. The Department of Health advises that taking HRT on a short-term basis is a suitable treatment for menopause because the benefits outweigh the risks.

Worried about the female menopause and getting pregnant?

Getting pregnant takes longer than many people think on average a  couple who have sex regularly without using contraception get pregnant within two years, but each month your chance of getting pregnant is only 20%.  High levels of FSH are only one of many reasons why you may be having trouble getting pregnant.  To increase your chances of getting pregnant it will also help if you accurately predict your day of ovulation by using one of our home ovulation tests.

Pregnancy is the result of a complex chain of events, your body must release an egg from one of your ovaries (ovulation). That egg must then go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb) And a man's sperm must join with the egg along the way (fertilise)
The fertilised egg must then  attach itself to the uterus or womb (implantation).

Any number of problems can interfere with these steps and can cause Infertility.
