Chlamydia often has no obvious symptoms. Consequently, Chlamydia infections are increasing quickly and is one reason a higher number of couples are seeking IVF treatment. New research has shown that Chlamydia can make men infertile by reducing the quality of their sperm. Both men and women can use this quick and easy home test for chlamydia.

Chlamydia affects all age groups, but is particularly prevalent in the under 30's. However, any sexually active person can be infected with Chlamydia - including gay men.

Symptom of Chlamydia

Chlamydia is known as a "silent" disease because about three quarters of infected women and about half of infected men have no symptoms. If signs of clamydia are present they usually appear within 1 to 3 weeks after exposure. The good news is that, once detected, Chlamydia is easily treated.

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia in women?

In women, Chlamydia initially infects the cervix and the urethra. If left untreated, it may spread into the pelvic area and infect the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and complications including infertility. If the cervix of a woman has not fully matured they are at particularly high risk of infection.  The following symptoms may be indicative of a Chlamydia infection:

• An increase in vaginal discharge
• Lower abdominal pain
• Pain on urinating
• Pain during sex
• Bleeding between periods or after sex

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia in men?

• A discharge from the tip of the penis
• Inflammation of the urethra; making urinating painful
• Pain and swelling in the testicles are uncommon
• Men who have engage in anal intercourse may acquire an infection in the rectum which can cause rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding

Causes of Chlamydia infection

As Chlamydia has no obvious symptoms, it can easily be spread to partners without it being noticed. The more partners you have, the greater your risk of exposure to infection. However, you don't have to be promiscuous to catch a Chlamydia infection.  You only need to have unprotected sex with a single infected individual to catch it. It is also possible to become re-infected with the disease. Put simply to avoid catching it, you must prevent fluids from an infected individual from entering your body.

Chlamydia infection can be contracted in the following ways;

• Unprotected vaginal sex
• Unprotected anal sex
• Unprotected oral sex

How to prevent catching chlamydia

There are ways to minimise your risks of catching Chlamydia from infected people; these simple changes that can make a big difference:

• Always wear and insist on using a condom. Always practice safe sex
• Carry on using condoms until you and your partner are confirmed STD free
• Never feel pressured into NOT using a condom, ask yourself is it worth the risk?
• Try not to let a situation arise where you could be without protection, always carry a condom
• Remember, just because you have had Chlamydia once, it doesn't mean you will not get it again
•  Every time you have unprotected sex you are at risk of Chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Chlamydia treatment

If a home chlamydia test reveals that you do have a Chlamydia infection, you should make an appointment with your doctor to be treated with a course of antibiotics which should successfully treat the disease. Left untreated in women, the Chlamydia infection can spread to the fallopian tubes, ultimately blocking them completely, causing infertility.  Why risk your fertility when testing for a Chlamydia infection is so easy and treating the disease in its early stages is so simple?
