Vaginal discharge and itching is incredibly common and can cause needless embarrassment and worry. By testing for the cause of your vaginal discharge you can rule out the sexually transmitted infection Trichomonas Vaginalis, and take the correct treatment.
Important note, there is wide spread confusion between bacterial vaginitis and systemic yeast infections. If you are displaying the symptoms of fungal infection then a home test kit for Candida albicans maybe more suitable. More details about the symptoms of a systemic yeast infection can be found on our Candida Albicans pages.
If you have constant or reoccurring symptoms of a vaginal infection such as itchiness, soreness or odour problems, then testing for Trichomonas vaginalis makes sense. Many women simply dismiss feminine itching and soreness and treat themselves incorrectly with quick fixes which only mask the symptoms of a vaginal infection. Consequently, the underlying cause of their problems is not addressed and the problem persists.
SafeScreen’s home test kits can accurately determine if you have a parasitic infection or not, allowing you to receive the correct treatment. Correct diagnosis and the correct treatment is the only sure way of eliminating any vaginal discharge or odour problems.
What is Trichomonas vaginalis?
Trichomonas vaginalis is also called trichomoniasis or shortened to TV and is a tiny parasite which causes an infection in the vagina or in the urethra in men. Anyone who is sexually active can get it and pass it on; you don't need to have lots of sexual partners.
What are the symptoms of the infection?
50% of infected women and the majority of men will have no symptoms. If you do have symptoms then normally they appear between 3 and 21 days after infection. In women the symptoms of having a vaginal infection are:
• A fish smell
• White vaginal discharge
• Soreness around the vaginal area
• Vaginal itching and inflammation around the vagina
• Brown vaginal discharge
• Pain on passing urine
• Pain during intercourse
Most men will not have any symptoms of infection such as a fishy smell but will remain carriers, however symptoms experienced by some men are:
• Pain when passing urine.
• White discharge from the tip of the penis which can stain underwear
• Inflammation of the glands or foreskin
How do you catch Trichomonas vaginalis?
Trichomonas affects men and women of all ages. It is usually passed on during unprotected sex with an infected person.
Organisms can survive for up to 24 hours in bodily liquids and moist surfaces for 1 to 2 hours; although possible it is very rare to become infected with trichomonas from sharing towels, washcloths or baths. The parasite does not grow well in the anus, mouth or penis, you cannot catch trichomonas from oral or anal sex.
Trichomoniasis is found worldwide and the majority of cases are seen in young women between age 16 and 35.
How do I Perform the Test?
Testing a vaginal infection is very straightforward. A cotton wool swab is used to gently wipe the genital area and the test is then performed by following the simple instructions included.
All orders received before 4.15pm are dispatched the same day by 1st Class Royal Mail. All home test kits are delivered discretely in plain, unbranded packaging with no indication of the contents inside the box. Boxes are then posted inside a secure jiffy bag ensuring complete privacy.
How can I prevent vaginal infections?
Although Trichomonas vaginalis doesn't cause any serious long-term health problems, you may want to minimise your risks of catching this STD, the best way to do this is by:
• Always wear and insist on using a condom and practice safe sex
• Never feel pressured into NOT using a condom, ask yourself is it worth the risk, not just from Trichomonas vaginalis but from other STD infections?
• Try not to let a situation arise where you could be without protection, always carry a condom
Treatment for Vaginal Infections
Treatment for the infection is usually quick and effective with antibiotics such as metronidazole or tinidazole. Your doctor will advise you on the best course of treatment and sexual partners will also need to be treated even if no symptoms exist. You should avoid sex until your doctor or clinic has given you the all-clear.
